Use Salt to Prevent Dehydration & Colic in Winter Months
When the temperature drops, animals need to consume more feed to stay warm. This provides energy and it also creates heat as it breaks down, keeping your livestock nice and warm!
As feed consumption goes up, so do hydration requirements. Demand is increased even further in winter, because forages provided are very dry. However, most animals will not consume enough water because it just too darn cold to drink. This is where we start to see problems; eating lots of very dry, dry matter and barely drinking! Horses are especially susceptible to impaction colic and livestock will see condition loses. One of the “tricks of the trade” for all livestock, is to provide ample salt to drive hydration. The simplest way is to hand-add additional loose salt to your rations or to top dress your feed. Salt blocks are not recommended because simply put, animals don’t want to be licking a frozen block.
The recommended amount varies by situation, but a good way to look at is to provide as much salt as you would if it were the heat of the summer. Surprisingly enough, the demand is very similar!
GMCO’s Fine Stock Salt is a natural trace mineral salt that goes through minimal processing to ensure a pure product, just as nature intended. Since the salt is kiln-dried to less than 1% moisture, will not clump during storage, making it very easy to mix or feed free-choice. Furthermore, because it is so dry and pure, no additives are used to prevent clumping.
